I just added the above photo per the request of the PD. I believe I've oriented it in the proper direction.
A 58 year old cyclist was struck and killed two days ago in Howell Township, NJ (near Asbury Park). A fellow cyclist friend posted this link on his Facebook page. The local police seem to think the offending car was a 1990's, four door, black Toyota, but they released a few pics of a broken lens, so I thought perhaps we could narrow it down. If there's a better way to get the ball rolling on this, let me know, or forward this to the right person.
Thank you

Wow that is scarily close to me. I actually ride out in the howell area. Absolutely awful. I hope they catch the person. Tons of mindless idiots around here. I can't read the report, but I bet this happened on Rt 524.
It kind of looks like the 1990-1991-1992 Lexus LS400 LS-40 headlight

Just read the patch report, I was wrong about the road. I will definitely keep my eye out for a car with a broken headlight that fits that description.

90s maxima and 95 corolla both look likely. Corolla headlight shown.

I feel the same way... last year I lived in Jackson, right outside Howell and the Township.. really scary stuff

I know exactly where it is. I used to travel 195 west/east every day. Had a friend from school go to Jackson HS.

Corolla for sure 93-97.

man the lenses are similar but the lines inside are different spacing sizes and the boarder seems a little bit thicker. Definitely a Toyota variant for sure.

Is it though? The reflector optics in the Corolla headlight photo run vertical, while the PD photo ones seem to be horizontal? That or it's a very tall looking headlight?

You know what would be a great idea?? Just like finger prints, take important features of cars and put them into a database. Headlights, taillights, grills..... stuff that only a specific cars could have. With all the drones/cameras/government eye technology currently happening around us, a random picture of a suspected car or pieces to a headlight in this cas could be run through and BINGO BANGO BONGO.......perp found.

We need a ruler next to the damn pictures if we are to help with such obscure items to deduce from.

I don't think they pieced the headlight together right in that pic. There's no car that has a 1'x1' or so headlight. I was looking at the curvature and depth of the lense.

I need a banana for scale.

What about parts bin cars? Like tailights on wranglers could be mistaken for trailer lights

Can't be. Those are glass.

Toyota Camry, late 90's early 2000's

I think it's a '98ish Camry - just because the lenses are a little more 'swept back' than the Corolla, like the pieces in the photo.

I'd say early '90s Ford sedan. Looks like a '91-'93 Taurus to me (anyone wanna recheck my model years?).

They look really similar, count the ridges if possible (I can't on my phone). That should tell us.

OK... I don't have a clue. That being said, an exact dimension of the distance (horizontally) between the two hard lines (vertical) would go a long way in winnowing out those ideas that are "close". Just a thought...

My parents' old Plymouth Voyager had something similar, but I think this headlight is slightly larger.

My first thought was a 95-97ish Toyota Avalon. Fits the 4 door toyota thing too.

What about people that burned off there fingerprints?? or first time non printed offenders?? There are always exceptions to the rules. You are right in trying to find holes in this idea. There are holes in everything. I could be wrong in saying this but every time i have seen these articles posted (help me find/what car is this?) they have been mainstream vehicles. Even if it was a jeep with trailers lights...how many cars use trailer lights for taillights??? probably only jeeps. I was just spitballing ideas.

This looks very similar to the 90's Honda civic lenses. I believe the shape and style are very similar, especially the 4 cross lines that run left to right. The image above is from a 99, however, I believe the earlier 93-97 lens may be a even closer match. I'll keep looking.

It's a piece of a 97-2002 body style camry headlight lens assembly. I worked in the parts department at a toyota dealer for 10 years. I've sold hundreds, possibly thousands of them to auto body shops.

Thank you. And thanks to everyone offering up their opinions. The local PD is watching this page and following up on all suggestions. I will upload more pics later but right now I'm juggling kids.

A Gen 1 Lexus LS had glass headlights. The pictures look similar to the passenger side marker light, which on that car are plastic.

You can burn off fingerprints?!
![]() 03/14/2014 at 17:26 |

I can kind of see it, bottom right corner would be closest to the center nose of the car (left headlight, lens is inside out), probably this piece is chipped off a center portion of the headlight, so the car still has pieces on the left and right of the hole.

I am on a phone as well.
Hopefully we have helped narrow it down for the officers investigating this fatality however. Regardless it Seems to jive with the witness descriptions.

Pretty sure it's a Toyota Tercel. As soon as I saw the light my brain went 'TERCEL!'
![]() 03/14/2014 at 17:51 |

The Tercel light has a slightly less severe curve. The Corolla's lines are too close together I think.

Thanks. If I could head down there and just search for a day, I would. I'm up in NNJ but I used to come to your area a lot for work. Your screen name suggests you might know where the bodies are buried in Jackson (I think it was Jackson)...

I lived in Lacey Township (a bit south) when I was much younger, and my father used to bike to work in Toms River every day. I say used to because he got hit by a woman who ran a stop sign a t-boned him on his bike. He still has back and knee problems, and it's been 28 years.

...One with headlights. Rather, one headlight now.

They could potentially use Data/Micro Dots.. they're spray on ID that's mostly used to recover stolen vehicles and parts... If they were sprayed onto the front of the vehicle then any debris can be matched to the VIN

The pieces displayed on a white 1 inch grid back ground would REALLY help. Its hard to judge the size of the fragments when they are on a dirty floor tile.

Second-gen Lexus LS400 is as close a match as I can find. The designs of the lenticular elements seem to match, including the angling-out of the upper row as it approaches the corner. The size seems consistent as well- this was not a car with narrow headlights.
![]() 03/15/2014 at 05:37 |

I think you're on the right track. My guess is second-gen LS, but google gives me tiny images and ambiguous associations.

haha where there is a will, theres a way. I'm struggling to remember what movie it was where the guy chewed off his fingertips in prison so he could not be identified.
